Tips on Choosing a Large Kitchen Appliance

Whether you are remodeling your kitchen or simply need a new appliance because the old one is on its last legs, choosing a new appliance can be a difficult task. Especially if it’s a large and expensive appliance, like a fridge or a cooking range.

There are quite a few things that you need to consider, and you may not even know where to start. Given how much money you are likely to spend, you best be sure you’re making an informed decision. This is why we reached out to home appliance professionals at Lars Appliances. They agreed to give us the rundown of the most important things you need to consider before you buy a new appliance.

Know Your Kitchen Space

The first thing you will need to decide is whether you are looking to buy the same size appliance as the one you are replacing, or if you want to make a change. If it’s the same, you’re pretty safe on this front – you already have an appliance that will tell you everything you need to know.

On the other hand, if you are changing the appliance size, or if you’ve done some major changes in your kitchen, it’s time to bring in the measuring tape – the last thing you want is to buy (and have transported) a large appliance that doesn’t fit in your kitchen. Another important thing to consider is whether you will be able to get the appliance through the door and the rest of your house to the place it’s going, not just the final place.

What Are Your Needs

Similar to the first point – you really need to know what your needs and plans for this appliance are. And if you’re simply replacing one appliance for one that is comparable, you should have no problem. However, if your use cases have changed, or do not correspond to the appliance that you have (and are looking to replace), perhaps you should see what else is out there for you.

For instance, buying a cooking range with 6 or more burners when you don’t really do much cooking is pretty wasteful and superfluous. On the other hand, having a single-door fridge for your whole family sounds a bit too cramped and not enough.

Make Sure You Get Warranty (and Keep It)

Buying new appliances is expensive, there’s no way around it. The good thing is that they typically last for a long time. And just in case they don’t, there are manufacturer’s warranties. When purchasing a new device, make sure to ask what is covered by warranty and how you can make sure you are covered by it.

More importantly, though, is keeping the documentation you need in order to be able to actually use the warranty should something go wrong. You may think that it’s a bit defeatist to think in this way, but it’s in fact, not – it’s just making sure that you can access all of your rights as a customer.

Ask the Seller about Delivery

Bulky and heavy objects (such as your new appliance) can cost quite a bit. Before you buy an appliance, discuss the issue with the appliance showroom – you may be eligible for free shipping. This can save you a lot of money, especially if the delivery fee increases with distance.

However, make sure to read (or discuss) carefully – you may only get curb delivery, leaving you with an immensely heavy appliance in front of your house with no easy way to bring it inside.

Now that you know the basics, you’re ready to go out and pick out the perfect appliance for you.
